Aug 26th, 2008 at 4:53am Just throwing this out as a topic of discussion. What sort of things have you found you needed to research for your stories? Places you've visited in person or virtually, books you've read, topics you've looked into to make your story come alive? For myself - I have books on the history of the Midwest, bookmarks on helicopters and airplanes, baby names, arrest procedures, hospital procedures, forensics, Metropolis, NYC, weddings and funerals. I can go on. So, what things have y'all looked up for your stories? Those who say it can't be done should get out of the way of those who are doing it. WWW IP Logged

Reply #1 - Aug 27th, 2008 at 8:52am I got three different books on baby names out of my local library so I could make a list of names I like and didn't have to take long thinking up one.I also had to research pregnancy and multiple births as my Lois is having triplets soon. (I think my mum might be getting worried...) I also had to do a bit of research about what it's like living in America and unique things they do over there. I spent an interesting Maths lesson quizing my friend from Seattle about the school system (Junior high? What?) and things like Thanksgiving and Independence day. IP Logged

Reply #2 - Aug 27th, 2008 at 7:43pm Hmm, let's see... ---radiation poisoning ---asteroid detection agencies ---emotional affairs ---various physics theories (parallel universes, space/time, wormholes, etc.) ---stellar spectrums ---Kryptonian language (from the Modern Kryptonian site) ---the layers of Earth's atmosphere There's a lot more, but that's what I can recall off the top of my head. I always have to do a ton of research, given that I'm inexperienced in just about everything imaginable. IP Logged

Reply #3 - Dec 13th, 2008 at 11:56pm Cellular structures and organelle functions, atomic theory & quantum mechanics, stellar lifespans and various forms of nova/supernova reactions, New York City/Manhattan (since Metropolis was described as being patterned after the upper Manhattan, above 14th street; In DC's "Ask the Answer Man", it was stated that Metropolis and Gotham City were "adjacent to New York City, across the harbor from each other"), and, oddly enough, role-playing game mechanics! Reply #5 - Dec 26th, 2008 at 3:35am I've researched how a newspaper works but I can't say that my fics get too technical or plotty, so I just kind of wing it. I have medical/hospital/ER knowledge if anybody gets stuck with that, I can help. WWW IP Logged
